In fact, educated people had sophisticated way of understanding the natural world but had a different way of explaining it. It was through a way of view called scholasticisim. It is a worldview based on combination of: religious thinking (christian belief) and aristotle"s works. Aristotle"s works were rediscovered in latter part of middle ages and became influential. Authority over experiment - authority had an important place in scholasticism. Aristotle"s works thought to be of great wisdom so there was a tendency to give that more weight than empirical observations and experiments. The bible is another source of authority that was given precedence. Teleology - teoleogical explanation is used by scholasticism. The idea was to use the notion of a goal or telos to explain how things behave in the world.
