Manning
- Preston manning- founding leader of the reform party of Canada and member of
parliament
- In 1997 Manning became leader of the official opposition
- Assembly was called to 1. Develop an “Agenda for change”- a list of basic reforms
required by Western Canadians to improve our economic and social condition, and our
position within Canadian confederation, 2. To recommend an appropriate political
vehicle for advancing the West’s agenda for change over the next few years, including
the next federal election
- While the West will continue to whole-heartedly support the promotional efforts of
groups like the Triple E Senate committee and Canada West foundation, it’s important to
consider the necessity of a political vehicle which will carry the West’s Agenda for
Change directly into the political arena
- A new party in the reform tradition- we want to create a new federal political party to
represent West to represent the great political “reform tradition”
- Reform tradition began in mid 19th century with group of reformers in Canadian colonies
who decided to fight against the vested political interests and inflexible colonial
structures of their day to achieve responsible and responsive government
- Quebec and Canadian Northwest regions where spirit of political reform continues to
manifest self- usually in times of constitutional or economic stress- in form of new
political movements seeking to implement change by challenging and on occasion
displacing traditional party structures
- West Canada doing bad economically, other parties were not working in West’s interests-
general parties wanted to please everyone
- Brokerage parties since they focus on majority people ignore others- Manning saw this as
unfair and wanted to create a new party to represent West Canada’s interests
- He wanted this party to incorporate an ideologically balanced party so it could appeal to
groups of people that would vote for others, shouldn’t be negative about how things are at
specific moment, did not want a party that is always negative, party that appeals to
different regions so that it could get voted, puts forward many ideas
- Reform party was created but PC and Conservatives were dominating government and
reform party took a lot of conservative support away and became primary oppositions
and forced conservatives to reassess what it believes in and its values
- Played a role in how successful conservatives were in voting for Harper
A country that must be made- Rene Levesque
- Rene Levesque- founder of Parti Quebecois, Quebec premier
- Belonging- we are Quebecois- we speak French, Quebec is our home, we are conquered
people, we are heir to the early America that was almost entirely French, we differ from
other North Americans slightly but cannot surrender our basic difference
- The acceleration of history- the traditional society we though would treat us with care is
gone, the new technology and modernization have invaded our homes, the development
of technology has both promises and dangers- promises of abundance, liberty, fraternity-
