Chapter 1: scientific thinking: distinguishing fact from fiction. Psychological fact: the body of psychological findings that are so dependable we can safely regard them as true. Approach of evaluating all claims with an open mind but insisting on persuasive evidence before accepting them. We must have a willingness to keep an open mind to all claims and A willingness to accept claims only after researchers have subjected them to careful scientific tests. Critical thinking: set of skills for evaluating all claims in an open-minded and careful fashion. Applied research: how we can use basic research to solve real-world problems. Chapter 2: the scientific method: toolbox of skills. Correlational designs: examine the extent to which two variables are associated. Correlation conclusions are limited because we can"t be sure why the predicted relationships exist. Words used: associated, related, linked, went together, etc. Correlations can be positive, zero, or negative.
