Individuals suffering from anorexia see themselves as fat despite being underweight. Typical characteristics: reduction in the total number of daily calories and avoidance of certain (high-calorie) foods, ritualistic eating, excessive exercise, purging behaviours. Binge eating (eating significant amounts of food during a period of time) Purging (self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics (drug that increases passing of urine), or enemas to control weight and shape) Anorexia nervosa: dsm-5 diagnostic criteria: restriction of energy intake relative to requirements, leading to a significantly low body weight in the context of age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health. During the last 3 months, the individual has not engaged in binge eating or purging behaviours. Weight loss is accomplished primarily through dieting, fasting, and/or excessive exercise. During the last 3 months, individual has engaged in recurrent episodes of binge-eating or purging behaviours.
