Individuals develop a fear of fatness, who perceive themselves as fat, and reduce their food intake to the point of emaciation. Individuals suffering from anorexia see themselves as fat despite being underweight. Typical characteristics: reduction in the total number of daily calories and avoidance of certain (high-calorie) foods, ritualistic eating, excessive exercise, purging behaviours. Binge eating (eating significant amounts of food during a period of time) Purging (self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics (drug that increases passing of urine), or enemas to control weight and shape) Anorexia nervosa: dsm-5 diagnostic criteria: restriction of energy intake relative to requirements, leading to a significantly low body weight in the context of age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health. During the last 3 months, the individual has not engaged in binge eating or purging behaviours. Weight loss is accomplished primarily through dieting, fasting, and/or excessive exercise. During the last 3 months, individual has engaged in recurrent episodes of binge-eating or purging behaviours.
