Lecture 1: tuesday, january 16th, 2018 - syllabus discussion. In research paper, if you use a statistic, make sure you heavily analyze it. Do not make intro longer than half a page. Paper in intro must include: purpose, thesis, topic sentence. Writing centre in the lib - ask for mackenzie. Statistics are highly problematic - only take into account the people/cases that have been counted or people who actually have reported. Family violence - almost none of it is reported!! 90 percent is not reported and therefore not located and counted within statistics. Historically families were understood as people who were related through blood (bloor related) and/or legal ties (legal contract ie marriage contract, adoption contract); offspring of a common ancestor; this is only a tiny segment of families. Big deal when william married kate, is because they were the first couple who had no family relation to one another.
