Social analysis of family violence: families are sites of what, how are families defined, up until the 1880s, family was understood through blood and legal ties. Sharing a common ancestor in which you"re an offspring/have a legal agreement: today, family consists of people who aren"t blood/have legal ties. Eg. adoptive kids of remarried parents - considered family. Eg. saying someone threatened you will not be regarded as abuse bc no tangible evidence: financial: women that live w their partner in legal marriage. Everyone in society is pitted against each other: scarcity of resources - less social services to take and use. People getting married to people within their own class/group: after 1880s, there is freedom to choose. Equality: everyone starts from same place false notion of meritocracy. Freedom: freedom to choose freedom to compete in marketplace: competition: central part in how we shape everything.
