Purpose of Research:
- Process of systematically gaining info
- Increasingly important as governing agencies demand evidence that programs & practices are
effective
- Evidenced-based practice is practices whose efficacy is supported by evidence (research/
facts)
- Accumulation of knowledge that allows use to practice effectively and transparently
Ways of Knowing:
- Knowledge is gained through: personal experiences
: knowledge of others
: tradition
: use of scientific methods
Qualitative Research:
- Used when little of nothing is known about a subject
- f”nd out about top”c
- Driven by meaningful phenomenon
o Not about the numbers but about finding out meaning
- Process helps researchers gain in-depth understanding from observations and/ interview
Benefits of Research:
- Gives the marginalized people a voice
- Creates relationships- between researchers and researchpower relationshippolitics
Limitations:
- Value laden & subjective
- Not fully accepted in policy
- Not replicable
- Bias
- Labour intensivelots of work in doing research
Quantitative Research:
- Display findings mostly in numerical terms
- Explanatoryattempts to explain relationship between entities
o Often referred to as variables)

- Quantitative imperialism
- Post claim on what is truth—but t“ere’s no f”nal trut“
- Dualism- researchers vs those being research
Produce knowledge vs consume knowledge
Question of power
- Colonialism & imperialismqualitative research used to colonize people
- Connected to issues of male & white-oriented-feminist-critical race
Research Bias:
- Qualitative research:
o Researcher has preconceived bias- opinion based on own experiences
o BUT acceptable in qualitative research for bias to play role in interpretation of events
& selection of facts
- Quantitative research:
o B”as ”s “e unknown or unacknowledged error created dur”ng…
Design of study
In choice of problem to be studied
Over the course of study
During interpretation of findings
Mixed Method Research:
- Two types of research method: quantitative & qualitative
- BUT w“en bot“ researc“ met“ods are used, ”t’s called MIXED METHOD RESRACH
Research Designs:
1) Exploratory
o Discovery
o Use our powers of observation, inquiry, & assessment to form tentative theories about
what we are seeing & experiencing
o Applies: quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods
2) Explanatory
o Design to look at correlation between 2 or more variables & attempts to determine if
they are related
o If related, in what way & how strongly are they related
o Applies: quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods
