BPK 142 Midterm: Procedures
Procedures
3-5: Anthropometry - Skinfolds
Skinfold Caliper
1. Subject is relaxed.
2. All readings taken at right side of body unless otherwise specified.
3. At anatomical site, measurer grasps folds w/ index finger + thumb of left hand. Back of
hand always faces measurer, fingers pointing down.
4. Slightly roll and pull skin using grasping fingers to encompass a double fold of skin +
entrapped subcutaneous tissue.
5. Grasp of skinfold maintained throughout measurement.
6. Caliper grasped in right hand w/ reading scale on caliper facing upward.
7. Jaws of caliper applied at right angles to skinfold, 1 cm below near edge of grasping
fingers.
8. Release jaw slowly and take skinfold measurement 2-4 secs after pressure is released.
9. Record reading to nearest 1 mm.
10. Open calipers and release skinfold.
3-8: Waist Circumference
1. Clear subject’s abdomen of all clothing, accessories.
2. Feet shoulder width apart, arms crossed over chest in relaxed manner. Take a position
to the right side of the subject’s body on one knee.
3. Waist circumference measurement taken at superior edge of iliac crests. To find this
landmark, palpate the upper right hip bone of the client until you locate the uppermost
lateral border of the iliac crest.
4. Draw horizontal line at this landmark at midline of body.
5. Position tape around abdomen so that inferior edge of tape is at level of landmarked
point. Measuring tape in horizontal plane around abdomen.
6. Apply tension to tape so that it is snug, w/o causing indentation to skin. Measurement to
nearest 0.5 cm.
8-4: Flexibility - Sit and Reach
Wells and Dillon flexometer w/ ruler arm attached at 26 cm mark.
1. Subject prepare for test by performing slow static stretching of lower back + posterior
thighs (modified hurdle stretch held for 20 secs repeated 2x on each leg)
2. Subject removes shoes and sits down at test apparatus w/ knees locked, legs flat on the
ground, feet 6 in apart pressed firmly against baseboard.
3. W/ legs fully extended, arms evenly stretched w/ palms down and hands together (one
over other), subject bends and reaches forward. Cursor is pushed as far as possible
along scale w/ fingertips.
4. Position of max flexion must be held for approx 2 secs.
5. Lowering head will maximize the distance reached.
6. Do test twice.
