Document Summary

Physiology = the study of living things and how they function. Physiology helps us understand how the body works, from the smallest part (cells) all the way to the whole body. It helps us understand how different parts of the body work together. Homeostasis = the maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment: body has set points that determine levels of certain things, goal is to maintain these levels within a tight range based on the set point. Examples: temperature, blood pressure, blood glucose level, ph. *homeostasis does not equal equilibrium: homeostasis = maintenance at a certain level/set point, equilibrium = equal levels between everything. Negative and positive feedback loops affect homeostasis: negative feedback loops, able to turn itself off once homeostasis is reached. Involves stimulus -> sensor -> signal to integrating center -> integrating center -> signal to effector to begin change -> effector -> output. It moves the system away from homeostasis: examples breastfeeding and childbirth.
