Realism a. b. c. d. e. f. how realist images mean. Realist images appear to simply reflect the world as it is, but that is the result of careful construction: television highly constructed to appear unconstructed. Realisms: a variety of styles and strategies, codes and conventions that we have learned to read as "real" Depends on the familiar: reproduces a world we already recognize. We recognize (not reality), genre, style, conventions, narratives, elements of storie about ourselves. Frame by frame, deconstruct the images, make visible the codes, conventions, and narrative structures. Authenticity: music video [country, ad or hip hop] codes of authenticity in it. Because realism produces dominant ideology of societal values. Reading on heartland values, which appear natural and normal. It works on the familiar so it seems natural. Extreme makeover: these shows tie us more deeply into ideology because they are closer to real life. )
