Crim 210 - lecture 1 - correcting misconceptions about youth crime. Behaviour of young ppl - longstanding concern to public. Gov"s treatment of young ppl in conflict w/ law has been subject of considerable controversy. In recent years, ycja has been extremely controversial. Principles behind ycja constantly being challenged by media & politicians. Public feels as though youth crime progressively getting worse. May largely be due to overrepresentation of violent youth crime in media. There is contradiction b/w public perception that youth getting away w/ murder in part b/c of lenient justice system & empirical reality that children & youth no more criminal/dangerous than in past - schissel. Issue of youth justice should be dealt w/ from analytical & critical mind set. Should not allow personal thoughts & beliefs to be sole influence of perceptions of youth justice. Much of info we get about crime in general & youth crime in particular - obtained from media.
