Text: Paul Krugman, R. Wells, I. Au, and J. Parkinson, Macroeconomics, 2nd Canadian Edition,
Worth Publishers, 214.
Evaluation: There will be a midterm exam and a final exam. The midterm exam will be held
during the class period on Tuesday February 28, covering material on the outline through Week
6. The final exam is scheduled by the Registrar and will cover material from the entire course.
Your final course grade will be the maximum of Formulas A and B:
Formula A: Final exam (55%), Midterm exam (35%), and Tutorial grade (10%)
Formula B: Final exam (90%) and Tutorial grade (10%)
Your tutorial grade will be based on a number of assignments.
There will be no “make-up” exam scheduled for people who miss the midterm. Note
that requests for extra exam marks will involve re-grading the entire exam.
Course Outline
For each week the Reading relates to that week’s lectures; you are advised to do it in
advance. The Tutorial lists end of chapter problems that will be discussed during the tutorial.
You should work through these questions in advance of the tutorial. These questions are NOT to
be handed in. Your answers to Assignment questions, (end of chapter problems) are to be handed
in during that week at a time specified by your TA. The assignments will be returned to you and
discussed in the following week’s tutorial. Each second assignment is to be done in a group of
three or four students Assignments 2,4,and 6.
Week 1 (Jan. 4 Jan. 6) Introduction
Readings: “Browse” Chapter 6 for now. We will refer back to this chapter throughout the course.
Note: No tutorials this week.
Assignment: No assignment this week.
Week 2 (Jan.9 Jan. 13) Measurement of Macroeconomic Variables
Readings: Chapter 7 and Chapter 8.
Tutorial: Discussion of supply and demand analysis.
Assignment: No assignment due this week.
Week 3 (Jan. 16 Jan. 20) Long-Run Economic Growth
Readings: Chapter 9
Tutorial: Chapter 7: Problems 1, 6, 7 (c) and (d), 10 and Chapter 8: Problem 3
