We should just observe people and try not to understand their cognitive processes (behaviourism) There was limited study of mental processes. Behaviourism introduced a rigorous design in psychology. Lasted for 50 years, behaviourist theories are so simplistic it got boring. Chomsky: famous linguist, more famous political activist critiqued skinner"s book that his theorist language is too simplistic and silly. Applied research on cognition and attention study it and the result is applicable to everyday life. Attending to different speakers not observable: behaviourists can"t observe who"s paying attention to who.
