We have firm understanding of cognitive/neural basis of behaviour
Psychology is not a unified discipline
- We studied consciousness in the beginning
- Then there was Behaviour movement
- Neuroscience (cognitive revolution) (how cognition drives behaviour)
We will look at 2 perspectives of psychology in this course
- Traditional history perspective
- New history of psychology (comes from new history of science that happened in the 60s)
Philosophy of science and Historiography, ontology, theories of nature of being and reality will be
covered in the first half of the course.
Review recent forms of philosophy
Early experimental work done
2 schools of psychology (2 views of the discipline)
- Structuralism
- Functionalism
Many other streams in psychology
- Psychoanalysis
- Psychodynamic approaches
- Clinical side of psychology
- Gestalt psychology
- Behaviourism
- Developmental
- Humanistic approach (positive psychology)
- Cognitive approach
Written assignments are based on articles we read.

History

PSYC 308 is required because it teaches us our independence from philosophy and sociology.
Psychologists use empirical methods to test philosophical questions.
We will review many historical stories in this course.
History legitimizes the field of psychology (and all the different schools ie: Clinical).
Traditional history: science is progressive, we accumulative knowledge, get better over time.
New History: science is shifts in world view (not always based on new findings/invention).
Evolutionary psychology is very new/specific sub discipline. (started to see citations in 1994, now theres
a lot in 2014).
Is important to know your research methods, and statistics, and also your history of the psychology
disiplie. Helps us eoe a ette siee so e a ake sue e do’t ake the sae istakes
past researchers have.
Historiography: study of various ways historians have written history.
Thee’s ays to tell the histoy of a siee
- The great man approach (u tell about the great key people in the history ie: Charles Darwin for
Evolution)

These ways are progressive oriented (going in a linear way, science going in one direction getting better
over time)
Psychology from traditional history perspective is a cumulative science (we just find out more and
more information).
New history is different. SCIENCE IS A CONTINUOUS PROGRESSION FROM CHANGE TO TRUTH.
(Scientists not neutral, they have their own perspectives but they try not to bias other people). Bias is an
