ENGL1005H: Love and Hate
Week One Content Notes – Romantic Movies
Three Themes:
1. Desire – Casablanca
2. Power – The Empire Strikes Back
3. Self and Individualism – Titanic
Desire - Casablanca
Ancient Greece and Rome were very interested in desire – seen as being joint to reason, the driving force of life
itself, was to be embraced, was good, but had to be regulated, towards the good of the people
Buddhism – desire is the source of all suffering, there will always be things people want but can't have, and this
will lead to sadness as we will not feel complete
Christian/ Renaissance – desire is problematic, should be rejected (sexual/romantic desire) – in the middle
Something we will always life with, the gap that will always exist between what we have and what we want, once
we get what we want, a new want will be created, the cycle continues
o* Fulfillment of desire is the death of desire *
hate is put at bay
-Clip One
oScene is meant to create sexual tension, romance is very clear
odesires can only survive without being fulfilled
-Clip Two
oLeaves everyone wondering what happened in the last scene – did they have sex, were desires fulfilled,
gap between desire and fulfilment
oHe thinks that her and her husband must be together – a true love story
oThey will always have the memories in Paris, keeping them apart ensures that the desire will remain in
place and will not be lost
Power – The Empire Strikes Back
Power will always be at stake in any relationship – power imbalances imposed by gender distinctions
Women have power in relationships because men are so in love with them that they are willing to do anything for
them
Spend much of their time arguing with each other but end up falling in love – not hate but there is tension
between them because they do not like each other
Hatred is one side of the coin, love if the other
-Clip One
oHan Solo is in charge of the ship, Leia's weakness is played up in the scene to make him seem more
powerful, but she is not impressed with his help, asks him to stop and he continues to kiss her
oPhysically overpowering her, not listening to her when she says no until she gives, distressing scene
because it shows that this is what men want and think women want – if he continues on then eventually
she will give in – male power and dominance
-Clip Two:
oHan Solo orders everyone to protect Leia – makes everyone believe that when Han is defeated she will
need someone to take care of her and protect her as she cannot do it herself – she plays this up and
transfers herself from the power of one man to another
oShe tells him she loves him, he responds with "I know" – "I love you" is not something Han would
normally say – gender expectations (not sensitive, doesn’t show emotion or talk about love, remains
tough and cocky)

oWomen have disadvantages in relationships with power, but so are men, both are trapped by gender
expectations / gender imbalance – his manhood may be at risk – behave like a man, don’t display
emotion or show weakness
Self / Individualism – Titanic
Female passivity to male action is being emphasized
Rose is split between how much she wants Jack and how much she wants a new Rose through her relationship
with Jack – to be in a relationship with him means she is submitting to the roles when she is passive currently
For him, he has someone submitting herself to him – chance to be an artist as well, wants to help her and submits
to her but also wants to be an artist – greatest work of art isn’t the sketch, but the new Rose he has now created
from the relationship
She does not like what she seems, hates the self her family is forcing herself into, hates the man who is buying her
and claiming her, attraction of her relationship with Jack is that he is the opposite of this man
-Clip One:
oMale fantasy, women is better off submitting to male action
oAs soon as the women gives herself over to the male, she finds freedom, independence and fulfillment,
being herself
oMetaphor of flying – being free by placing herself in his hands, submitting to the other means you will be
free – contradictions??
-Clip Two:
oLetting her guard down in front of Jack
oMale usually pays the female for her sexuality, but in this scene, it is the other way around (reversing
economic arrangement)
oClearly states what she wants to Jack – Jack creates a new sense for herself of who she could be
oAgency and participation
oHe is still the active agent – still very much in charge of what is happening – creating a sense of self for
her – finds self and identity
oSexually loaded, but the act itself does not occur, similar to Casablanca
oSelf and selfhood is the point of the romantic relationship
