Three themes: desire casablanca, power the empire strikes back, self and individualism titanic. Buddhism desire is the source of all suffering, there will always be things people want but can"t have, and this will lead to sadness as we will not feel complete. Christian/ renaissance desire is problematic, should be rejected (sexual/romantic desire) in the middle. Clip one: scene is meant to create sexual tension, romance is very clear, desires can only survive without being fulfilled. Power will always be at stake in any relationship power imbalances imposed by gender distinctions. Women have power in relationships because men are so in love with them that they are willing to do anything for them. Spend much of their time arguing with each other but end up falling in love not hate but there is tension between them because they do not like each other. Hatred is one side of the coin, love if the other.
