The man is cruel and abusive, often taking the form of a man bird therefore sedna attempts to escape on a kayak with her father but her husband gets mad and creates a vicious storm. Her father sacrifices her, understanding that they will both perish if she does not return to him. She falls into the river but attempts to return to the kayak. Her father breaks her hands to keep her out, eventually breaking them off. She is unable to return to the boat and turns into a mermaid, living out the rest of her days as the goddess of the sea: les inuits au canada sedna: esprit/la d esse de la mer.
