Power, Inequality and Stratification (Class and Gender)
social order is also about social conflict
when we have conflict, power and resources are not distributed equally
stratification – intertwined with social inequality
unequal distribution is feature of every society, but what differs is it is based on different criteria
sociologists have determined historically that the three key criteria are the basis of stratification: social
class, gender and race and ethnicity
ascribed status and achieved status
consequences of stratification and inequality in Canada
stratification system in Canada overall resembles a pyramid shape
ascribed characteristics – social class
qualities of social class – two of the classical theorists – Marx and Weber (how they understood
social class)
Marx – how social class related to the means of production – had your own means of production
or you were working class – how this division/tension lead to social change – when the working
class started to understand they were being exploited they would overthrow the system for a classless
one – for this to happen, they had to develop the class consciousness objectively, people are located
here or there and subjective side had to do with their awareness of what class they were in
Four steps of class consciousness ??
Weber – inequality class, but said there was more going on introduced status
Status and class, political power
Gender – key concepts: sex and gender, patriarchy, feminism
Macro level analysis of gender stratification – two seriate spheres or realms – public/productive and
private/reproductive
