What will we be talking about: deviance (rule breaking) and social control (rule making and enforcing, theories of deviance and social control, difference between informal and formal mechanisms of social control, deviance versus crime, inequality and deviance. Assignments & tests: midterm (in class, october 3rd 25%) Covers all material (readings, lectures, videos etc up to that point: final exam (final exam period 35%) Cumulative, greater focus on the material that was not previously tested. Similar format to the midterm test, more questions and more application-based questions: course paper (due november 14 20% Digital copy and hard copy due at the start of class. 5% per day late penalty, unless accommodation has been granted. 8-10 pages; argument that includes some form of deviance. Specific assignment instructions will be posted on the course page: reading recaps (best 4 of 6 5% each, 20% total. Keep on top of your readings, show what you understand.
