Define and explain: racism: the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Most racial beliefs are based on the belief that race is biological. Race is a modern idea, ancient societies were not divided based on physical differences. Race is used to justify social inequalities as natural. Three types of racism: obvert (obvious, racial slurs), covert (more subtle, assumes that your race is your main defining characteristic), and structural (institutional, normalization of whiteness, our society is structuralized around privileging whit people) Racism in canada: black people experience more roadblocks to employment, housing, education. People believe that racism is not as a big deal as it once was, especially in multicultural places such as canada. Freak show: a lot of people in the freak show were people of colour (monkeys, exotic, etc)
