Document Summary

Evolution accounts for the unity and diversity of earth. Cuvier hypothesized that species didn"t change over time, but rather a natural disaster just wiped off everyone, and new species just came and settled again and again. Lamark hypothesized that species change based on the use or disuse of certain characteristics, also known as the inheritance of acquired characteristics. Darwin went aboard the hms beagle, and went to the galapagos island. He saw great diversity on that island. He saw redundant forms of a species from one place to another (similarity), and variation is species in the same place (dissimilarity). Darwin"s argument consisted of many observations and inferences. Observation 1 was that organisms often produce more offspring than that survive. Observation 2 was that the populations are relatively stable, and observation 3 that resources are limited. Inference 1 was that organisms need to compete for these resources.
