Plot-pattern of events and situations, how the work is structured/likes of action (in long stories) Tension: conflict: clash of actions, ideas, desires, wills, 2 characters clash, inner turmoil of 1 character, a character against nature, or society or morals, etc. *mrs. mallard realizes her husband is death and such makes her happy. *the reader realizes that is mrs. mallard the one who dies. The reader does not expect mrs. mallard"s death. The structure of the text reinforces the surprise ending, the joy that kills : ironic reversal- oxymoron-paradox. Irony: mrs. mallard doesn"t die from the grief people think she was going to die for, yet she dies because her husband was really alive, she dies of disappointment not relief that he"s back. Paradox: statement or expression so self-contradictory as to provoke us to seeking another text or context that it can possibly be true.
