Document Summary

Cecs (columnar epithelium cells) line the lumen of the midgut and form a brush border surface with many villi and microvilli to increase surface area. This single cell layer is found along the gut. They also have receptors on the brush border and these receptors that are specialized for molecules to be up taken (also ion coupled-later). Regenerative cells (nidus) must be able to divide into two cells: one to replace itself and one to differentiate into cecs. Nidus cells can then be proliferated into all cecs due to the regenerative process. Cecs are often damaged by food passing and therefore must be replaced often: high amounts of vesicles are found within cecs for secretion! Cecs are more for secretion in the anterior of the midgut and absorbing nutrients in the posterior end of the midgut. Note: cells either absorb or secrete but not both. They gain the precursors for secretion from the blood on the outside of the gut.
