80s and 90s - longer hours = more money = more consumerism, upscale in the American
Dream - wanting bigger homes, better cars. comfort is no longer enough - new consumerism
most recent phase of consumerism - looking at western euro-centric philosophy
ego centric philosophy - radical individualism
when try to maximize one part of the system, throws other parts out of balance
why would over-consumption be an issue for human ecology/ecologists

a cause and effect process
how we think about systems is changing over time - movements from linear to circles to webs,
etc.
part of family - ever seen consequences of how people act/ feel etc - grounds people in not the
idea of a system - but a web of interconnectedness, a complexity of interactions between the
people, few or many. to understand that the problems that are most difficult, come about
how are people connected, how are they connected to where they are living, how is where they
are living connected back to the people
