Who/what: old master credited with founding taoism/a work attributed to lao tzu, and is most important canon of taoism. Written mostly in poetic form and 5000 words long. Compliments confucianism in some ways like that a sage should rule but contradicts it in other saying the sage ruler should do nothing at all instead of many things for the people. Troubles of the world are not caused by governments failing to do too much but by governments doing too much. Proposes a way of life and philosophy of government for the elite. Urged people to attune to nature, and offered no governmental progress. Who/what: the most recent lord buddha, founder of buddhism. Historical signi cance: founder of the four noble truths, practice of morality. Wisdom develops with compassion: gaozu against buddhism, empress wu in favor, founds buddhism which today affects millions of people. All about living a moral life, being aware of thoughts/actions, and developing wisdom and understanding.
