Lecture 8 religion, technology, and new approach: scientific revolution. Theories: mechanical universe copernicus and galileo. What is science: originated from the latin word scientia which means gaining knowledge, today, there are many layers of science. Many technological advances came from military research, a lot of it is also driven by money: example: wi-fi was originally invented for military uses. Historiography: there are two approaches taken by historians. Internal (old: scientists make discoveries without being influenced by social (external) factors. They were independent thinkers and inborn geniuses: example: albert einstein is a genius that came up with all these ideas, including time travel, external (new, external social factors shape the development of science and technology. It said arrows fly because the moving force is embedded in the object itself. Butterfield said this theory challenged aristotle"s theory (no motion without a mover): accused of being a nazi supporter.
