Understanding typical growth and development helps nurses to predict, prevent, and detect any changes from patients expected patterns. Seen as process where sociocultural, biological, and psychological forces interact w/ individuals over time. Synchronous processes that are interdependent in the healthy individual. Physical growth= quantitative (height, weight, etc) and is contextual (ex. socioeconomical status) Development= progressive and continuous process of change leading to increase skill and capacity to function: result of complex interactions, simple to complex, general to specific. Factors influencing growth and development: genetic or natural forces w/in the person, environment in which the person lives, interaction that takes place between these 2 factors. Theory= organized, often observable, logical set of statements about a subject. Models intended to account for how and why people develop as they do. Mechanisms of development= explanatory components of each theory, or the means by which the developmental tasks are achieved.
