Living cells die if they have one or more living cells on each side (i. e. too crowded and they die). All dead cells will come alive if they are adjacent to one other living cell. Know how to read the diagram: first generation is the top line, second generation is the second line etc. Look at the first generation, look at what is on either side of it, and then determine what the rule is about life/death in the second generation. Identify which are the living and dead cells: the placement of the living cells and dead cells is extremely important in order to determine what will happen to that cell in the second generation. 2-d automata: there are 2-d (or higher) cellular automata, can design any number of rules (life, death, multiply, hibernate, ghost etc. , two states: life, death. Intermediate states: hibernate, ghost, etc. (example taken from class notes)-
