Many theories of relationship development proposed that partners move through a sequential series of stages that are associated with increasing amounts of commitment and involvement stage models. Different aspects of fit between two partners naturally would become important at different times in the relationship. Stimulus-value-role theory: couples progress through three stages in the development of a relationship. Individuals make stimulus, value, and role assessments of each other throughout the entire developmental journey; each factor becomes more prominent during a particular stage. Process models suggest that relationship development is fuelled by sometimes imperceptible changes in intimacy, self-disclosure, exchange of benefits and costs, and other interpersonal processed that occur between partners. Proposed one of the first process models of relationship progression. Social penetration theory: a theory which targets self-disclosure the reciprocal exchange of self- relevant information as the fuel that propels partners along their developmental trajectory.
