Document Summary

Chapter 17 using punishment: time out and response costs. Punishment: behaviour > consequence > decrease in future probability of the behaviour. Consequence can be presenting aversive stimuli ( positive punishment) or removing a reinforcer (negative punishment) Punishment should be used as a last resort, only attempt if functional intervention is ineffective. Function intervention techniques: extinction, differential reinforcement and antecedent manipulations. Controversial because it may violate the rights of the human being treated. Negative punishment used more often than positive punishment. Negative punishment: time out, response cost. Time out: loss of access to positive reinforcers for a brief period contingent on the problem behaviour, results in a decrease in the future probability of the problem behaviour. Time out is short for time out from positive reinforcement, two types: exclusionary: removed from room/ area with reinforcement, non exclusionary: remain in room where reinforcement is but removed from access to positive reinforcers.
