The family is a social group, a social system and a social institution. A couple living common-law (with or without children of either or both spouses); a couple may be of opposite sex or same sex. A lone parent of any marital status, with at least one child living in the same dwelling. Also, sons or daughters who do not live in the same dwelling as their parent(s) are not considered members of the census family of their parent(s). Economic family refers to people who are related by blood ties, marriage, or legal adoption and are sharing a dwelling. Household - refers to people sharing a dwelling, whether or not they are related by blood ties, legal adoption, or marriage.
