Chapter 1
Definition of communication
How we receive, perceive, interact, express our thoughts, feelings, ideas, information.
Body language plays a vital role in expressing our views.
Environment, the circumstance influences the way we communicate.
Our social background and our thoughts impact the way we communicate.
The media; how we learn new information
Communication is a systematic process when individuals contact with each other for
meaningful interpretation.
Symbols:
- We use particular words, motives, objects to symbolize
- Individuals create an interpreted meaning.
- mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object, function, or
process, e.g., the letter or letters standing for a chemical element or a character in
musical notation.
Communication is about creating meaning and interpret meaning.
Communication is basic, it has got practicality. Knowing people and better.
How does media influence us, the impact it has on our life?
Why do we study communication?
How we view our selves.
Personal impact: how we view ourselves is really important
Professional impact in every field, more in some than others.
Cultural impact, how we view our and other societies.
We communicate to express our emotions like courage or fear, joy or sorrow, satisfaction
or disappointment with appropriate gestures and words.
We communicate seeking information: A passer by asking you the way to the post-office,
the student asking the teacher for some clarification or the investigating policeman
making discreet enquiries are all seeking information by using this communication skill.

We communicate to persuade: It means that we want someone to do something and this
desire of ours is communicated. The mother patting the child to stop crying, is also a
form of communication
Without communication, the mysteries of life would be hard to unravel. In reality,
communication is what makes the world go around. A kind of life giving elixir and it
means to give life to symbols, words and relationships
Different areas of communication:
Interpersonal means between individuals, whereas intra personal is within ourselves.
Communication is crucial in any team environment; how we interact with people we are
working with and how they help us to get a desired outcome.
Leaders giving speech in public; how we speak in public areas among large number of
people
Performances; the idea of performance in everyday life. How we mold our own image for
other peoples. Presenting ourselves in front others.
Componential communication: is the analysis of words through structured sets of
semantic features, which are given as "present", "absent" or "indifferent with reference to
feature". The method thus departs from the principle of compositionality.
Media- how it has changed our lives, how it open avenues to interact with other people
and also how it is source of distraction.
Organizational- hierarchy of people (any group of people, family, work, friends.)
Intercultural- Intercultural communication is a form of communication that aims to share
