Document Summary

Diary entry: non-fiction (from september 2dn to 6th) 1st published in 1820 (the diary of john evelyn) The great fire of london began at 1am in sept 2, 1666. Fire started in the bakeshop of thomas farynor, baker to king charles ii. Took 4 days to get the fire under control. Most london buildings were wood and pitch constructions, dangerously flammable. Fire spreading was stopped by the gap that had been caused by the fire of 1663. Standard procedure to stop a fire from spreading was to destroy buildings on the path of the flames (fire-breaks) Positive effect: the plague diminished greatly due to the mass death of the plague-carrying rats. The french and the dutch were entering the city. Evelyn is writing a diary so he does not expect anyone to read it. His purpose is to capture the scenes of london during the great fire of 1666.
