Document Summary

A little place off the edgware road - graham greene. This short story has a third person narrator, whose point of view is limited to the perspectives of. The narrator is also an unreliable one, which being in craven"s consciousness, leads the readers to mistaken conclusions, as craven himself does. A clear example is when craven, and the reader by extension, comes to realize that he had been sitting next to a murder in the cinema, fact which will later be refuted. The main character"s name, craven, is an onomastic symbol that serves to characterize him as a coward, a fearful individual. The ambiance of the story is crucial and it sets the mood. The cinema is old, dirty, infested with spiders and rats, cheaply furnished, dark (as a cinema should be) The achilles statue could be interpreted as a foreshadowing allusion to craven"s conflicts concerning his body. Crave so hopes that his own body will be defeated.
