The devotio moderna was a new grassroots movement" that took hold in the low countries in the late middle ages. It emphasized the spirit of christianity: inner devotion, and traits such as humility, rather than outward acts of christianity. Advocates would live in groups together as lay brethren in monastic like communities, where they would lead an ascetic life of prayer and spiritual work, such as copying out manuscripts. An example of such a group was the bretheren of the common life. Another would be the imitation of christ, which was a devotional manual written by thomas kempis. It was important because it demonstrated how prior to the reformation there was an immense appetite for the divine, and people felt compelled to fill needs that the official church was not filling: unam sanctam. The unam sanctam was a papal bull issued by pope boniface viii in 1302. It was an extreme assertion of papal power.
