Between 1700-1791, 685,000 slaves were imported to saint-domingue. The majority of these slaves worked on sugar plantation. Their work was overseen by other slaves themselves. There was an internal hierarchy among the slaves which allowed them to develop leadership skills. This system was maintained by violence (they used dogs in chasing runaway slaves). The code noir of 1685 had many provisions to protect the slaves but they (cid:449)ere(cid:374)"t follo(cid:449)ed and often ignored.
