KNES 213 Final: summary of ethics

76 views2 pages
3 core principles of TCPS2: respect for participants, concern for welfare and justice (excluding certain
groups from the study for no reason-it is justified to exclude some though if there are more risks to
them)
Not considered research: quality assurance and creative practice
When an REB Review is necessary:
-humans and embryos are involved
When it isn't necessary:
-data is simply for company use (if for larger studies then it needs review)
-public info is being used
-observation is in public spaces, b/c they aren't undergoing any additional risk, there is no expectatio of
privacy and they won't be identified in the findings
-no interaction with those being observed
-no identification of specific individuals in dissemination of results
-secondary use of anonymous data/bio materials but if the way the data is being used the second time
breaches privacy they must get consent again or if they need to ask additional questions consent must
be asked for again
The Proportionate Approach assesses risk and benefit and ensures that participants are exposed to
minimal risk such as physical, psychological, economic or social harm and direct, indirect or
advancement of knowledge benefits. Also risk to researchers.
Consent mb free, informed and ongoing, but pressure may be felt from $ inc. Researchers must assess
subject capacity to consent and contact guardians/proxy if they feel the subject cannot make a decision
fully but if they regain capacity then the verdict must come from them directly before continuing.
also, if kids are being tested, consent comes from their parents but if they do not wish to be tested that
wb obeyed. Note that parental consent often means a breach of privacy, ex. for children in counseling.
Consent Process
1. Recruitment
2. Info
3. Document consent
4. Debrief when req. which includes explanation of how participant data wb used, purpose of research
(this is given now not before b/c sometimes it alters subject performance) discolsure of any deception
used and its rationale, opportunity for q's.
Researchers may request alternate methods of consent but this mb approved by REB.
