PHIL 249 Study Guide - Final Guide: Pleasure, Categorical Imperative, Flowerpot
Document Summary
What makes a life good is that desires of some sort are satisfied rather than frustrated within that life. 1) the value of a life is determined by the extent to which one"s actual desires in one"s life are satisfied. The more that are satisfied, the beter the life. Roughly, the good life is the pleasant life; a life is better in itself for the one who lives it if it contains a more favorable balance of pleasure over pain. Assumptions about pleasure and pain: pleasures are certain feelings. Sensory hedonism: every episode of pleasure is intrinsically good;every episode of pain, intrinisically bad, the intrisnic value of an episode of pleasure is equal to the amounbt of pleasure contained in that episode. Consider a person who just wants peace and quiet. Solitude doesnt want these things because they bring him pleasure. Imagine he gets no pleasure or pain and a lot of peace and quiet.
