We follow it because we are commanded to. We follow it because it is in our interest to do so. Some assume law is above politics and people, that most people follow the law and some people who do not will be constrained. Ignores the power dynamic: some people don"t have the power to make the law, not everyone is equal in the legal system. Melian dialogue: strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must. Hobbes: state of anarchy/nature, lives of men are nasty and brutish: wwii creates a dominant realist perspective, law is that of the stronger, doesn"t apply to politics, only thing that matters is power. If it exists at all, it serves the interests of the stronger parties. Theory of hegemonic stability: international regimes are created by dominant states and only continue as those dominant states have an interest in continuing them, or when they are no longer dominant.
