Document Summary

Explain how collective identities matter by drawing on as many examples as possible from the course material. Identities are cultural, historical and political which means that they are created by human societies, expressed symbolically, they change over time, influence and are influenced by the ways that power is distributed in society. Identities are the social labels ascribed to individuals or groups, locating the individuals or group in political society more broadly (textbook, p. 308). The identities that matter most in politics are collective identities. Collective identities are so important to politics because it draw boundaries between in-groups and out-groups. The way in which such boundaries are constructed varies. Collective identities are very sharply bounded, and individuals are not allowed to pass from one group to another. One can choose whether or not to belong to the group in question. As collective identities can unite us in one way but most of the time it divides us.
