Personality: the unique characteristics that account for enduring patterns of inner experience and outward behaviour: the study of personality is mainly concerned with individual differences. We are unaware of this content and cannot become aware of it, except under special circumstances. Particularly important to development of personality: three central forces of personality development: !1: develops as a result of learning, works under the reality principle(awareness that it is not always possible/acceptable to have all wants and desires met) Neuroses: an abnormal behaviour pattern caused by unresolved con icts between the id, ego, and superego. Dependency on pleasures of the mouth; also general dependence on mother. Repression of sexual impulses; identi cation with same-sex parent. Defence mechanisms: unconscious tactics employed by the ego to protect the individual from anxiety. Keeping unpleasant memories or thoughts buried in the unconscious. Refusing to admit an addiction: i don"t have a problem . Creating a socially acceptable excuse to justify unacceptable behaviour.
