Sentinel cells discriminate self from non-self by means of prrs. These cells include dendritic cells (dc), macrophages (mo), mast cells and eosinophils. In addition to being sentinel cells, also act as antigen presenting cells (apc) Dcs as apcs phagocytize and present peptide antigens to na ve t cells. Dcs also direct subsequent immune response via cell-to-cell receptor communication & secretion of cytokines. Found in different tissues and have diverse functions: Innate effector cells because they carry out phagocytosis. Are recruited as effector cells during the cmir. Participate in nutrient recycling by phagocytizing dying cells. Ie. chicken bursa, fish kidney, and mammalian bone marrow. Sentinel cell types, except epithelial cells, are largely derived from bone marrow equivalent tissues. These cells differentiate from pluripotent stem cells by a process referred to as hematopoiesis.
