We have an indirect obligation to them so you don"t piss off their owner: we should care about animals because consumers care about it and we want to sell more shit. Higher duty of care towards relatives rather than strangers: dog is man"s best friend so we should treat it before farm animals. Animal rights: ethical rules place limits on treatment of animals. Respect for nature: duty to protect animals and their involved species. Should not mess with nature by genetically modifying: we should leave animals evolution made them. Could argue that only two philosophies in utilitarian (consequences are most important) and animals rights ( actions themselves are most important) Aristotle: ability to reason was most important which set us apart from creatures, humans therefore had absolute authority over animals.
