This is the time when the concept of race was also put forward: franz boas argued that every culture was unique, with a unique history, neither superior or inferior to one another. He rejected racism and promoted cultural relativism which stated that all cultures are equally valid and must be studied on their own terms. O(cid:373)e studied diffusion of customs, material culture, and ideas from one culture to another, looking at impact the diffusion may have between similarities of culture groups.
