The family defined: family: a married or common law couple with or without children, or a lone parent with dependent children. In the fourth century, the roman catholic church prohibited close marriages, discouraged adoption, and condemned polygyny, concubinage, divorce, and remarriage (all of which were previously acceptable from the old testament of the bible). This was to eliminate accessory factors that would give a family a male heir to property. Without a male heir, there would be a transfer of the property from the family to the roman catholic church: polyandrous family: a family consisting of a woman and her multiple husbands, along with their dependent children. Functions of the family: nurturance of the children. Human infants need active mothering since they are helpless at birth and the period of infant dependency is quite long.
