Document Summary

Hormones are secreted from endocrine glands and diffuse into the bloodstream. The main function of the endocrine system is to regulate and coordinate other body systems and thereby maintain homeostasis. Leisurly system of communication that often coordinates long-term processes such as growth, development and reproduction. Hormones are the chemical messenger of the endocrine system and seek to affect target cells. Hormones are classi ed as lipid-soluble or water-soluble: lipid-soluble move easily through membrane, water-soluble need to bind to a receptor on the membrane then go through process (know this see diagram for clarity) Insulin is secreted from pancreas in response to high glucose levels. Insulin prompts the liver to store glucose, causing its levels to drop. Pancreas sense low glucose and stops secreting insulin. Uterine contractions stimulate release of more oxytocin and therefore more contractions. Central role of hypothalamus and pituitary gland in hormone signalling: Hypothalamus: area of the brain that regulates physiological responses.
