Section 2: adaptation and acclimation: there are three ways that populations react when faced with changing environments. Shifting geographically to new locations that match the populations physiological tolerances: population adapts to changes in the environment. Just observing a difference does not distinguish between those two possibilities: there are a number of ways that acclimation in protein activity can happen. In some cases, acclimation happens as the organism develops and becomes permanent: oak trees are an easy place to see this, many species show irreversible acclimation, or acclimation that can only be slowly reversed. Depending on the species, much of the heat and water exchanges happen through the skin. This makes the amount of skin, or the surface area, a key to homeostasis: organisms can alter the amount of energy absorbed by their body by making the surface more or less reflective to incoming radiation.
