Document Summary

Lateral plate mesoderm: somatic mesoderm, splanchnic mesoderm. Somite differentiation: multiple induction events form the 3 different regions of somites, 3 regions = sclerotome (bone), myotome (muscle), dermatome (skin) Induction from ectoderm and neural tube: neural tube starts expressing wnt which will alter gene expression, dorsal half of the epithelial somite becomes dermomyotome, dermomyotome starts expressing pax 3 and pax 7. Induction from neural tube, ectoderm and notochord: cells in the dermomyotome going to be exposed to a balance of shh and wnt (from ectoderm and neural tube) In area of myotome (gray) expression of muscle specific proteins: myod and myf5, begins myogenesis, developing muscle cells = myoblasts, bmp-4 going to direct cells to become epithelial dermatome. In myotome have to inhibit bmp-4 so muscle cells can form: bmp-4 is inhibited by noggin and wnt. Skeletal system: includes the bones of the skeleton, cartilage, ligaments and other connect tissue that stabilize/connect bones.
