Study of drugs that alter the synthesis or action of hormones that are secreted in the body i. e. hypothalamic-pituitary-target organ axis; endocrine pancreas. Analog: chemical compound similar in structure & chemical properties to those of another compound, but di ers from it by a single element or group i. e. amoxicillin = penicillin analog, di ers by addition of amino group. Recombinant technology: produced by combining genetic material from more than one origin or source in genetic engineering, lab techniques used to join rna from di erent sources to produce novel rna. Drug permeation: penetration & spread of drugs through a cellular substance. Down-regulation: process by which a cell the # of receptors to a given hormone or neurotransmitter to reduce its sensitivity to this molecule. Jak/stat family: family of transcription factors that bind as homo- or heterodimers to recognition sites in gene promoters; mediates signalling from a variety of membrane receptors such as interferon, interleukin, hematopoietic & growth factors.
